In this long piece, AAN’s Obaid Ali is quoted on the general security situation in Afghanistan:
“The Taliban is very active; still able to pose a serious threat to government forces,” says Obaid Ali, head [sic] of the Afghanistan Analysts Network, a think-tank in Kabul. “They place themselves in rural areas where they can block supply routes and use local taxation sources and set up shadow governments.” But, he adds: “They have failed in any large-scale offensive because of the airstrikes and drone strikes by the Afghan special forces.” He predicts casualties will rise again in 2018.
