In a themed Afghanistan edition of the leftist German weekly, Jungle World, AAN’s Thomas Ruttig looks at how Germany’s current right-centre government prioritises a deportation deal with the Taleban over its official position not to recognise the regime, edging closer to the latter by practical cooperation (in German).
The Taleban? Not that bad. In Afghanistan, library shelves are emptying, books by female authors are being thrown out, and entire subject areas are disappearing. Schools are becoming Islamist, while child malnutrition is reaching unprecedented levels. The International Criminal Court is issuing warrants for Taleban leaders for the oppression of women in the country. Nevertheless, the German government has no problem cooperating with the very same Taleban – it has promised mass deportations. On the other hand, promises to bring former Afghan helpers of German local staff to safety in Germany are being broken.
