Washington Post, 22 December 2022

An article plus interview looking at former President Karzai holding out in Taleban-controlled Kabul, as some believe “biding his time” for another political role in h future, with his “strong relationships with the West, as well as with China, India, Russia and Iran.” Karzai, however, insists he has ‘no aspirations at all other than being in my own country and getting my children educated’, and his supporters comparing his role to that of Afghanistan’s former monarch during the 1960s and 1970s, before the Soviet invasion.

The Taleban don’t mince their words, saying his ability to speak out represented their “‘patience’, giving him amnesty even though ‘he is a criminal responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Afghans’.”
