Zalmay Khalilzad, Afghanistan-born former US ambassador to Kabul and, in 2009, rumoured to have considered a presidential candidacy himself is currently in Kabul: ‘I am here to facilitate an agreement among key personalities and forces on a possible consensus on key issues confronting the country, and the formation of a team to lead a broad public discourse on those issues’, including the succesion to the current president. According to Yunos Qanuni, Khalilzad – who is accommodated in the presidential palace – has agreed to work as part of that joint team. Asked whether he was considering running for the presidency again, he replied by email : ‘This is not the purpose of this trip.’ THis also is not a definitive ‘No’.
