The most recent of UNAMA’s report on civilian casualties of the wars in Afghanistan, this times looking at casualties of the latest round of Afghan-Pakistani fighting. It also contains a summary of “airstrikes by Pakistani military forces [that] impacted the Omid Drug Rehabilitation Hospital (Omid Hospital), a facility for the treatment of drug-affected individuals” in Kabul on 16 March 2026. Pakistan still denies it had “targeted” any civilian infrastructure.
Instead, Pakistani military repeated, vis-à-vis the BBC, the claim that the Afghan Taleban “use these drug addicts as suicide bombers”, adding that the centre was “most likely a suicide bomber training facility”.
The BBC calls this airstrike “the deadliest attack in Afghanistan, possibly ever, but certainly in recent history, including 20 years of war between the Taliban, and Nato and Afghan republic forces. (…) The scale of the death toll is so staggering it has shocked Afghanistan, despite its long familiarity with violent conflict.” Human Rights Watch called it “an unlawful attack and a possible war crime”.
