While the latter, at least in its headline’s suggests a ‘growth in poppy’, David differentiates: the poppy cultivation area in Afghanistan extended by more than 50 per cent (“while overall cultivation remains at historically low levels”), “yields were markedly lower than in 2024 due to drought & poor plant husbandry” and the expected “opium production in Afghanistan is unlikely to have exceeded 413 metric tons in 2025”, compared “to an estimated 414 Mt in 2024, and 1,279 Mt in 2023.”
