27 Nov 2014: “Afghanistan – Leap in the Dark” (AAN in Dessau, Germany)

Thomas Ruttig < 1 min

This is the title of a public presentation by AAN Co-Director Thomas Ruttig that will take place on 27 November 2014 in Dessau (Germany).

„Nothing is good in Afghanistan.“ With this sentence in her New Year’s sermon for 2010 then chairperson of the Council oft he Evangelical Church in Germany, Margot Käßmann, triggered a harsh controversy. The violent conflict must be ended as soon as possible, she demanded, and the German soldiers withdrawn.

This is now underway. In June 2013, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) officially transferred “security responsibilities” to the Afghan government. By the end of 2014, all NATO soldiers with ISAF mandate will be pulled out. Only a smaller contingent – including up to 800 soldiers from Germany – are to stay in an ISAF successor mission in Afghanistan.

This brings up immediate questions: What is the balance of 13 years of the ISAF mission? Will now everything be good – or at least better – in Afghanistan?
