7 October 2010: NAF collection on Afghanistan and Pakistan

AAN admin 3 min

With the ninth anniversary of the beginning of the war in Afghanistan upon us, the New America Foundation’s Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative has relased a series of research papers describing the insurgencies in Pakistan’s tribal regions and in Afghanistan. These collections, called “The Battle for Pakistan” and “The Battle for Afghanistan,” represent some of the most current and comprehensive research on the subject – including some authors from AAN.

The two collections include assessments of militant groups operating in every tribal agency, the relationship between politics and militancy in Pakistan’s northwest, linkages between al-Qaeda and various Taliban organizations, and others. In the coming months, NAF will be expanding The Battle for Afghanistan series to include more examination of the insurgencies in other parts of the country.

Last week, the New America Foundation and Terror Free Tomorrow released a
unique public opinion poll surveying residents of Pakistan’s tribal regions, and found intense opposition to the U.S. military operating in the region. More than three-quarters of those surveyed are opposed to the U.S.’s ongoing campaign of drone strikes, which the New America Foundation tracks in detail with our database “The Year of the Drone.”

The New America Foundation also released several papers earlier this year on “al-Qaeda Central,” examining the ‘militant pipeline’ between Pakistan’s tribal regions and the West; drone strikes in Pakistan; al-Qaeda’s central command structure and capabilities; Lashkar-e-Taiba in the tribal areas; and al-Qaeda’s use of the Internet. We encourage you to read these essays as taken together they present a thorough look at the state of al-Qaeda and its allies in Pakistan.

A list of all the research papers is below and the link to the start side here.
