19 April 2012: Informal Briefing on Legal Aid in Afghanistan

AAN admin < 1 min

The Swedish Embassy organised a discussion on 19 April surrounding the release of a new report by the Afghanistan Analysts Network (AAN): “Legal Aid in Afghanistan: Contexts, Challenges and the Future”.

The report, that was released on Wednesday 18 April, discusses the historical, legal and political context of recent reforms in the field of legal aid. It describes how the efforts of the international and legal aid community have, on one hand, been fairly successful and have made legal aid more widely available, while on the other hand the largely top-down approaches have led to controversy and structural problems.

Sarah Han, the author of the report, provided an overview of the main findings, after which Martine van Bijlert, co-director and senior analyst at AAN, presented some general observations on the challenges of internationally-led reform efforts. A discussion followed. Representatives from the UN, the EU and embassies attended the event.

Sweden is one of AAN’s donors, together with Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands, for the years 2011-2013.
