Talibãs querem mostrar outra cara (Taliban want to show another face)

AAN’s Thomas Ruttig is quoted in this article about the Taleban’s attempts to present a moderate(d) face to the Afghan population:

«Eles querem mesmo mostrar-se como o futuro Governo, a trabalhar a favor do povo», considera Thomas Ruttig, fundador e co-diretor da Afghanistan Analysts Network, ao Nascer do SOL. Se isso funcionará ou não é outra questão. Os afegãos «ainda se recordam do que se passou antes de 2001. Essas memórias ainda estão lá», salienta Ruttig, que viveu mais de uma década no Afeganistão. «Os talibãs podem dizer ou fazer o que quer que seja, as pessoas não confiam neles. Não sabem se este comportamento relativamente moderado durará», diz o analista. «Mesmo um regime talibã moderado pode ser insuportável para muita gente».

Whether or not this will work is another question. Afghans “still remember what happened before 2001. Those memories are still there,” says Ruttig, who lived more than a decade in Afghanistan. “The Taliban can say or do anything, people don’t trust them. They don’t know if this relatively moderate behavior will last,” says the analyst. “Even a moderate Taliban regime can be unbearable for many people.”)

Os talibãs «querem reconhecimento internacional, para governar o país precisarão desse apoio», realça Ruttig. «Não podem repetir os aspetos os aspetos mais grosseiros da sua ditadura, que acabou em 2001. Creio que aprenderam com isso. Mas claro que isso não significa ter um regime democrático sob os talibãs».

(The Taliban “want international recognition, to govern the country they will need that support,” stresses Ruttig. “They cannot repeat the grosser aspects of their dictatorship, which ended in 2001. I believe they learned from that. But of course this does not mean having a democratic regime under the Taliban».)
