Scheitern mit Ansage: Die deutsche Afghanistan-Politik

< 1 min

ARD, 19 August 2021

AAN’s Thomas Ruttig is quoted in this report in Germany’s largest public broadcasters attempt to summarise the West’s and Germany’s failure in Afghanistan and its reasons (in German):

The whitewashing was that for years the federal government presented the situation in the reports it submitted in a much rosier way than it was in Afghanistan itself. This starts with the federal government’s so-called progress reports, which were then completely discontinued in 2014. And it continues with the so-called asylum situation reports, where the security situation has been completely glossed over so that people can be deported to Afghanistan.

Much of what the federal government reported and then conveyed to the population in its statements was just still motivated by domestic politics to prevent more refugees from Afghanistan from coming to Germany.

There have also been attempts to remove Afghanistan from the public discussion. And this has been successful, especially in the political field. In the end, there were only very few members of the Bundestag who were really interested in Afghanistan and followed the topic.
