AAN’s Thomas Ruttig reports from former German chancellor Angela Merkel’s hearing in the Bundestag’s enquiry committee on Afghanistan: strong words on the outcome (“terrible failure”, “US left the NATO mission”) but weak on the reasons and almost zero self criticism. She said she only realised on 13 August 2021 that the Ghani government would not survive, and “did not get up on Sunday morning (15 August) expecting that President Ghani would flee the country” (in German).
