The Danish daily quotes AAN’s Thomas Ruttig here:

Thomas Ruttig, co-founder of the independent Afghanistan Analysts Network (AAN), tells Politiken that most Central Asian countries do not consider the Taliban a threat.

“Regional dynamics are at play here. Paradoxically, cooperation with the Taleban regime and trade routes through Afghanistan can make countries like Kazakhstan less dependent on Russia. The Taleban have never been active outside Afghanistan and the border area in Pakistan. The countries, with the exception of Tajikistan, are more worried about the Islamic State”, says Thomas Ruttig.

He adds: “This is a regional development. It’s a small breakthrough for the Taliban, but that doesn’t mean the whole world is following suit. It is of course more important if Russia also removes the Taliban from its list and that China takes small steps towards full diplomatic recognition’.
