“Ein Frieden mit den Taliban reicht nicht”

< 1 min

Frankfurter Rundschau, 23 December 2013

On the occasion of Germany’s new defence minister’s first visit to Afghanistan, the Frankfurt-based daily interviewed AAN’s Thomas Ruttig. He started with criticising Ms van der Leyen for continuing her predecessor’s and chancellor Merkel’s approach of flying to Afghanistan without meeting President Karzai or their ministerial counterparts. He demands that the new German government should make a new beginning with Afghanistan, first by treating the Afghan side on equal terms, by supporting independent election monitoring in 2014 and by avoiding to ‘talk up’ the elections in case they do not go well and by ‘looking beyong 2014’, by putting the words about ‘not letting Afghanistan alone’ by deeds and by remembering Germany’s responsability vis-a-vis Afghanistan as hist of the 2001 Afghanistan conference.
