In an op-ed opinion piece for the Berlin-based daily, AAN’s Thomas Ruttig looks at the contradictions between, on one hand, the continously deteriorating human rights and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and Germany’s dropping admission rates for Afghan refugees, particularly for young men. He calls it a ‘realities gap’ (in German). His conclusiuon:
In order to expedite deportations—a political priority—the CDU/SPD coalition is also courting the regime through “technical” contacts and receiving its diplomats. For the Federal Government, Afghanistan is of particular importance in this matter because, in 2025, it once again ranked as the primary country of origin for refugees arriving here. However: asylum seekers are not statistics, but human beings. What is cloaked as “technical” is, in fact, political. And wrong.
