The leading Swiss daily quotes AAN’s Obaid Ali on the IS’s strength in Afghanistan, saying that this is difficult to determine, that Islamist groups in other parts of the country [beyond Nangrahar] have declared their allegiance to IS but that this has more to do with distancing themselves from the Taleban then joining the IS’s organisational structure.

Zwar bekennen sich auch in anderen Landesteilen islamistische Splittergruppen zum IS, doch geht es dabei oft mehr um eine Abgrenzung von den Taliban als um eine effektive Eingliederung in die Organisationsstruktur des IS. Dessen effektive Stärke in Afghanistan sei sehr schwierig zu bestimmen, erklärt Obaid Ali von der Denkfabrik Afghanistan Analysts Network in Kabul.
