Bilateral [Afghan-Iranian] Relations: A blossoming friendship?

< 1 min

Deutsche Welle (online), 8 August 2013
AAN’s Thomas Ruttig is one of the experts commenting on the recent signing of an Afghan-Iranian MoU mainly about military and security cooperation. He says that it was a “clear message to the US that Afghanistan has other options” of security cooperation; in the light of the withdrawal of most international forces, Afghanistan is trying to diversify its relations and also put pressure on the US” with regard to the bilateral security agreement. Since Pakistan has made similar “attempts to try and sign a similar memorandum with Afghanistan but Kabul has so far only rejected…, the memorandum with Iran has to be interpreted in this context – as a further rejection [of] Pakistan”.
