In this online article (“On Trump’s [geopolitical] menu: Bagram military base”) for the Berlin-based German daily newspaper, AAN’s Thomas Ruttig describes the context of President Trump’s announcements to regain access to the US’s erstwhile largest military base in Afghanistan, Bagram, and of his demand that the Taleban hand back weapons delivered to the former government’s armed forces that fell into their hands in August 2021 (in German), including first US contacts with Pakistan’s government in order to win its support vis-a-vis the Taleban and Pakistan’s own current tensions with the Afghan Emirate. Both sides have made first goodwill gestures: While the US resumed its military aid program for Pakistan’s F16 jet fleet, Pakistan’s security services – with US intelligence – apprehended an alleged Afghan IS operative in Balochistan province who was allegedly involved in the devastating ‘Abbey Gate’ bombing at Kabul airport during the troop withdrawal in August 2021.
