All that remains: our questionable legacy in Afghanistan

Brisbane Times, 4 July 2015

In a very interesting reportage from Uruzgan, the article discusses the Australian forces’ legacy in that province, and of their backing of local strongman Matiullah (against the practice of their Dutch ‘allies’, quotes AAN’s Martine van Bijlert:

“Afghanistan is full of Western-backed strongmen who can be trusted to fight the Taliban. But they often abuse the local population, pushing them into insurgency, says Martine van Bijlert, a researcher with the Afghanistan Analysts Network in Kabul.

‘I don’t think, in general, the Taliban is seen as a viable alternative as a government,’ she says.'”But many people, in the abstract, see them as Islamic, whereas they are not always quite sure about this government. And it really matters how people are being treated locally by government representatives.'”

With a nice photo of the provincial governor and his car.
