AAN’s Thomas Ruttig is quoted here on the German debate about resuming diplomatic contacts with the Taleban in order to facilitate deportations:
“I find it very worrying that we are now [discussing] to start talking about deportations, rather than human rights, with representatives of a regime we so far sought to isolate. (…) The government is giving in to pressure from the far right.“
Expert Ruttig has the impression that the German government has never been in Afghanistan with its heart and is trying to wash its hands of it. Rather, it should reflect on its responsibility for Afghanistan. For 20 years, it has said that it is the second largest provider of troops and money. “To suddenly go back to zero and act as if it had nothing to do with it is completely missing the point.”
