The Persian service of French international broadcaster RFI reports AAN’s new publication about how Afghan households have fared after the regime change of 2021, “Afghanistan’s Unequal Economic Recovery.”

Afghanistan Analysis Network shows that the country’s economic recovery since the Taliban came to power has been small, limited, and highly unequal. A five-year household survey and World Bank reports show that despite modest growth, factors such as rapid population growth, a sharp decline in purchasing power, unequal distribution of assets, and job restrictions have prevented any opening up in people’s daily lives. Meanwhile, the widespread exclusion of women from work and education has not only increased household vulnerability and increased the burden of men’s responsibility as “the sole breadwinners” but has also left deep psychological and social consequences; a situation that has led the majority of society to a gradual collapse and extreme dependence on external factors.
